Application Process

How to Apply

  1. The College of Osteopathic Medicine does not accept direct applications. Candidates are required to submit a primary application through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS). Mark 621 for Touro University Nevada.
  2. Upon receipt, the primary application is reviewed by a representative of the Admissions Committee. Eligible candidates will be invited to complete a supplemental application and submit letters of recommendation. Information on required letters of recommendation, as well as links to an on-line version of the supplemental application, may be found on the Medical School Application Information page of this site.
  3. Complete Applications for Admission, which will include the AACOMAS primary application, supplemental application, and letters of recommendation, are reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Following this review, eligible candidates are invited to attend a personal interview with the Committee. Submission of a complete Application for Admission does not guarantee an interview and attending an interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Both steps are part of the admissions process.
  4. Candidates are advised of their interview results via U.S. mail, typically within two to three weeks after the interview. Candidates may also request an unofficial email notification of the Committee's decision. Decisions of the Admissions Committee are final and cannot be appealed.
  5. Acceptances are granted on a rolling basis. Typically the latest a student should apply is the first week of April prior the start of their choice of class.

Primary Application

Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine Nevada does not accept direct applications. All applicants are required to submit a primary application through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS). Mark 621 for Touro University Nevada. Touro University Nevada is one of the few schools that performs a screening based off of the AACOMAS primary application. The qualifying bar for this screening is reviewed each year; sometimes during an actual admissions cycle. Candidates will be notified of their status via US mail and those who qualify will be invited to submit a secondary application.

Supplemental Application

Candidates who pass the initial screening process will be invited to submit a secondary application and are mailed a supplemental application packet. The supplemental application cannot be submitted electronically as it needs to be submitted with the application fee. The Supplemental Application includes the application itself, together with the Technical Standards Certification Form, the Personal Statement, and the application fee of $100.00. Those who receive a supplemental application from Touro University Nevada have the added advantage of knowing that, on initial review, it has been determined that the candidate meets Touro University Nevada’s MCAT and GPA requirements. The application fee is not refundable under any circumstance.

Letters of Recommendation

All candidates who submit a supplemental application are required to submit the following letters of recommendation:

  • Letter from a physician, D.O. or M.D. (D.O. preferred) AND
  • Letter from a Pre-Professional Advisory Committee Letter OR
  • Two letters from science faculty familiar with your academic abilities
  • A Complete Application will include:
  • AACOMAS Primary Application
  • Supplemental Application (including Technical Standards Certification and Personal Statement)
  • All required letters of recommendation
  • Only candidates who submit all required materials will be considered eligible to obtain an interview. Submission of a complete application for admission does not guarantee an interview and not all candidates will be interviewed.

    The Interview

The Admissions Committee reviews complete applications and extends invitations to interview on a rolling basis. Invitations to interview are sent to those candidates showing the highest potential to perform well at Touro University Nevada as students, and finally as successful physicians. Interviews are conducted in a small group format. Two faculty members interview each applicant for 30 minutes. Interviews are typically held from late September through April.

Accepted candidates are required to submit a non-refundable acceptance deposit; a refundable tuition deposit is required later in the process. Upon matriculation, both deposits are credited toward tuition. The interview is a required step in the admissions process and does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

    Deferment

To be eligible for deferment, a student must first be accepted to the class for which they applied. Once accepted, a formal written proposal must be submitted to the Director of Admissions outlining reasons for deferment and stating why they should be granted time for delayed matriculation.

The Dean and the Director of Admissions will review the student file and formal request. There is no set policy on which reasons are considered acceptable and what grounds the Dean and Director of Admissions can grant deferment. Therefore, each request is dealt on a case-by-case basis.

    Reapplication

Any student is welcome to reapply to Touro University. It must be noted, however, that all previously acquired material by the Admissions Committee is disregarded. This means that students applying again must resubmit all application materials again for the subsequent year, including a new AACOMAS primary application, supplemental application (if granted), and recommendation letters.

    Transfer Policy

Touro University Nevada accepts transfer students from other U.S. osteopathic medical schools if they are in good academic staning and have acceptable reasons for transfer. Typically, approval is granted only to those desiring to transfer in as a second or third year student. Touro University will only consider transfer applications from students at other colleges of osteopathic medicine. Candidates for transfer must be eligible for re-admission to the previously attended college of osteopathic medicine.

Transfer applicants must provide the following information in the time to allow appropriate committee review proceeding the semester of intended enrollment:

  • A letter to the Director of Admissions indicating why the student wishes to transfer.
  • A supplemental application (with a non-refundable $100 application fee) clearly marked and highlighted FOR TRANSFER ONLY.
  • Most recent format of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score.
  • Official copies of transcripts from all post-secondary school and college.
  • Official copy of the most current osteopathic medical school transcript.
  • A letter from the osteopathic medical college in which the student is currently enrolled, stating that the student is in good academic standing.
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the osteopathic medical college in which the student is currently enrolled.
  • All the above material must be submitted to the Director of Admissions of Touro University in a timely manner. Acceptance of tranfer students will be dependent upn the student's qualifications, curricular compatibility, and available space. Additional course work may be required to satisfy Touro University curriculum.

    Application Status Checks

It is prudent from time to time for candidates to check on the status of their application for admission. Candidates are strongly encouraged to perform this task via e-mail. Please submit your requests to Jenya Bosshamer at jenya.bosshamer@touro.edu. It normally takes no more than one workday to receive a response from the Admissions Office for application status check infromation. While not recommended, candidates may request an application status check via telephone. Such checks are almost always done in a hurried manner; a manner which is not conducive to providing comprehensive and precise answers. Should this be the only method available, the Admissions Office can be reached at (702) 777-1750. Please provide the last four digits of your social security number and the program for which you are inquiring (Touro University Nevada) with your request for information. Touro University – Nevada is bound by privacy laws to release information only to the actual candidate. Friends and family are discouraged from attempting to obtain information, even if such information is being requested with the full knowledge of the candidate.

    More Information

    Ask the Director of Admissions

Roger Corbman, Director of Admissions, answers all of his e-mail personally. While often difficult to reach by phone because of his schedule, candidates are encouraged to e-mail him with questions, comments or concerns. Typically, the Director spends the early morning of each day replying to his e-mail. Except for those occasions when he may be out of town, one would expect a reply the morning following the initial communication.

Questions that do not require the Director's specific attention (e.g. application status checks) should be directed to Elizabeth Cammarata at ecammara@touro.edu.

    Campus Tours

Tours of the campus for applicants to the College of Osteopathic Medicine are typically given every Monday and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, beginning in late September until May. Individual tour appointments may also be arranged. Tours for other University programs are offered on other days.

Tours are typically led by first year student volunteers. No advanced reservation is required. However, because of various holidays and other days off, those wishing to join a tour are strongly encouraged to call well in advance to make sure that a tour will be happening on the day that a visit to the campus is planned.

It may also be useful to determine if the tour will be conducted by a student on the planned tour date. To confirm that a tour is being conducted and by whom on any day or to obtain additional information, contact the Office of Admissions at (702) 777-1750.

    Touro University Nevada
    Office of Admissions

    Application Timeline and Admissions Tips

Many questions arise regarding when an applicant should actually begin the process of applying to medical school and what steps need to be taken and when. The following timeline assumes an applicant wishes to enter medical school immediately following graduation from the undergraduate institution. As it is impossible to take into account all possibilities, however, the following timeline may need to be adjusted.

  • Take the MCAT in April of your Junior year.
  • June 1 of your Junior year, apply to AACOMAS (www.aacom.org)
  • September of the Senior year, complete secondary application
  • November of the Senior year, interview
  • December of the Senior year, get accepted
  • Graduate in June
  • Start medical school in August
  • Things to Remember:

  • Finish applications early as acceptances are granted on a rolling basis.
  • A recommendation letter from an M.D. personal physician who has known you for years may actually be preferable to a letter from a D.O. who has known you for 15 minutes.
  • Clinical experiences are important. Emphasis should be on working with people and having an enjoyable experience.
  • Your objective should be to qualify for an interview.
  • If you get an interview, remember how you got there.
  • The panel has already marked most of your background in GPA, MCAT, where you went to school, quality of your letters, personal statement, clinical experiences, etc.
  • Among other things, the panel looks for
    1. ability to articulate in front of colleagues
    2. critical thinking
    3. listening skills
    4. sensitivity to the needs of others
    5. the actual substance of your answer.
  • Use e-mail to check on the status of your application (jenya.bosshamer@touro.edu).
  • Virtually any accredited medical school should be able to tell you that there is enough financial assistance to meet your personal and educational expenses.
  • Be nice to Admissions staff and other representatives. First impressions carry heavy importance.
  • Send 'thank you' notes because it is the right thing to do, not to increase your chances of gaining acceptance.
  • Google
