ACOFP

ACOFP activities

In keeping with the goals of family medicine, the TUNCOM ACOFP chapter participates in volunteer activities that promote health for patients of all ages.  We volunteer regularly at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission serving dinner to homeless members of the Southern Nevada community, we offer our services at health fairs across the Valley taking blood pressures and spending time with doctors, nurses, and everyday people.  We not only give back to the community with our time, but we also raise money with bake sales and white coat embroidery to donate, collect canned goods for needy families, and collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Recent and Ongoing Activities

Las Vegas Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen: Students volunteered an hour of their time to serve dinner to the homeless in downtown Las Vegas.

Choose and Move Festival:  Students took blood pressures at a health fair sponsored by the Community Partners for Better Health at the Doolittle Community Center in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Rescue Mission seminar series:  DO students, in association with the PA program, reached out to the homeless community of Southern Nevada by hosting seminars at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.  Lecture presentations were prepared by students, and they included such topics as Wound and Foot Care, Diabetes, Nutrition, and Caring for the Sick Child.  Attendees are residents of the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, and are part of a recovery program that helps them rehabilitate from life-controlling addictions and prepare to rejoin society as responsible and productive citizens.  We are working on continuing this series for the 2008-2009 school year.

Tar Wars:  This anti-tobacco campaign is a national project of the AAFP, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and consists of students going to local elementary schools for a one-hour presentation to fifth graders about tobacco and why they should not smoke.  The program is geared toward issues fifth graders understand and care about, such as smoking gives you bad breath, buying cigarettes costs money you could spend on new clothes, video games, or other things you care about, and tobacco companies target young minds by using manipulative advertising.

White Coat Embroidery:  As a fundraiser, ACOFP offers embroidery of your white coat.  Having your name sewn on your coat looks great, and you won’t have to worry about losing your nametag.  This is the only embroidery that is approved by the school administration, and we offer this service several times throughout the school year.  Dates will be posted on the calendar, and announcements will go out via e-mail.

Pop Tab Collection for the Ronald McDonald House Charities:  ACOFP collects pop tabs from soda cans for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), and is currently holding a Pop Tab War between the DO11s and the DO12s.  Whichever class collects the most pop tabs by the national ACOFP convention in March will not only receive a trophy of their success, but also bragging rights for years to come.  Please pull the pop tabs off your soda cans and place them in these containers, located in the recycling areas outside each lecture hall.

The Ronald McDonald House is the biggest recipient of funds from the RMHC, and it is an organization that provides free housing for families of terminally ill children who are undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals.  This provides an invaluable service to families by allowing them to be close while their child receives the care he or she needs.
